Reflections on Global Health Nursing Scholars

Written by: Remilyn Gonzales, MHA, GHC, RN-BC,

As many of you know, my daughter is a Biology major at Bard College and is currently taking Entomology. Lately, our refrigerator has been filled with frozen insects, and our dinner conversations revolve around the fascinating world of these tiny creatures.

Her current research project focuses on the Monarch Butterfly and its remarkable migration. One of the most extraordinary aspects of the Monarch's life cycle is that it takes five generations to complete. The first three generations live only a few short weeks, each doing their part and making what could be seen as the ultimate sacrifice: reproducing and passing the journey on to the next generation. They will never complete the migration themselves. Instead, their efforts make it possible for the "super generation" to emerge, a generation capable of traveling nearly 3,000 miles to reach its destination, renew the cycle, and ensure the species survives.

As I listened to her describe this incredible story, I couldn't help but think about our Global Health Nursing Scholars program.

Over the years, many individuals have given their time, talents, energy, and unwavering support to build this initiative. Some contributed ideas, some mentored students, some worked behind the scenes, and others helped overcome obstacles along the way. Like those early generations of Monarchs, many have invested effort into something larger than themselves, knowing that the ultimate impact may be realized by those who follow.

Last weekend, as Xenia completed her own 3,000-mile journey, she represents our "super generation" butterfly. She carries with her the hopes, work, and sacrifices of all those who came before her. Through her experiences in NDH and your contributions, she will help begin a new cycle of partnership, learning, and global health change in Bicol University in the Philippines.

I want to thank every one of you who has been part of this journey. Your contributions, whether large or small, have mattered. You helped create the conditions for this remarkable opportunity to take a flight.

Like the Monarch Butterfly, our work is not defined by a single journey but by the generations that continue it. Thank you for helping our butterfly spread its wings. Until the next cycle begins ( future scholars ), know that your efforts have made a lasting difference.
